monday: arts

The Date: Sunday, July 24, 2006

The Event: Pretty Girls Make Graves

Thanks to Jelly NYC, there is a series of free concerts happening at the McCarren Park Pool every Sunday for the rest of the summer. I am not a hipster- at all- but I got coerced into going to the first concert of the series last night, headlined by Pretty Girls Make Graves. It was a blast and worth coming out for.

Pretty Girls is a tight band from Seattle and yes, they have the mandatory tempo change-ups that are so prevalent in indie music (or is it emo? Sorry, I'm not all that contemporary. Shit, that's a whole other category) these days, except instead of feeling forced or contrived, their transitions were sexy and smooth.
I'm not going to write a full review (it's Monday and I have other shit to do, like pack my office for a move), but suffice it to say that I'm a fan.

I'm also a fan of Jelly NYC for putting on these events and for keeping them free.
If you go and you can afford to contribute something, please do so everyone can continue running down the slip and slide, getting stung by dodgeballs, and enjoying the rocking music with you.
